In her films and projects she has been dealing with issues like the fates of the children of Sarajevo, the position of the Roma minority in the changing Europe, vanishing of the traditional cultures and communities of small Northern and Ugro-Finnish tribes and the position of the girls and women in various authoritative subcultures and religional groups. She has been working together with Finnish, Swedish, Dutch and Czech national TV broadcasters and radiochannels as well as with the Finnish Film Foundation and Center for the Audiovisual Development AVEK. She has also got many multicultural grants, like the ones from Nordic Film and TV Foundation and the Ecumenical grant of the Finnish Lutheran Church. Her major awards include the Silver Bear from the Berlin International Film Festival 1996 (for the film The Country Doctor, based on the novel of Franz Kafka and on the stories of the refugee children from exJugoslavia) and two Finnish State Art Prizes for her achievements in preserving the Roma folklore and bringing the minority issues into the common discussion in Finland. She has also received the Finnish Kiila award for her outstanding work in preserving and re-using the almost forgotten worker´s folklore and stories from the times of the Finnish Civil War in the film ” Far Away from Ural ” , 2008. In twenty years, she has had her film retrospectives and exhibitions in almost all European countries as well as in Japan, Canada , USA, Russia and China. Currently Katariina Lillqvist is also working as artistic curator in the Praque Puppet Museum in Czech Republic, developing there also a multicultural art cafe and gallery space. Her second book, ” In the Shadow of the Puppet ” , is on process. Her first book , ” Dear Mr. Tarzan ” , was publisded by Atena, Finland, in 2005. One of most interesting projects was a travelling exhibition between three European Modern Art Museums : IMMA of Dublin, Istanbul Modern and the Benaki Museum of Athens. Curator of this exhibition was Paolo Colombo, and the title of the project was IN THE PRAISE OF SHADOWS. The exhibition was supported by the Finnish FRAME organisation. Exhibition and installation of the film FARUZA for the Thessaloniki Biennale of Modern Art 2011, Greece. PRODUCTION GRANTS During the years 1991 -2014 Katariina Lillqvist has got over 100 production grants from various Finnish and international art organizations, foundations and companies.
