Filmmaker, scriptwriter Trần Anh Hùng is a French-Vietnamese filmmaker, born on December 23, 1962, in Đà Nẵng, and living in France since 1975. He studied filmmaking at the École nationale supérieure Louis-Lumière in Paris in the late 1980s. From the outset, he distinguished himself through a poetic and visually striking approach to cinema, deeply exploring human emotions and the human condition. His graduation short film, The Married Woman of Nam Xuong (1989), was selected for Critics’ Week at Cannes and marked the beginning of his international recognition. His first feature film, The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), won the Caméra d’Or and the Youth Prize at Cannes, received the César Award for Best First Feature, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. This success propelled him onto the global cinematic stage. Trần Anh Hùng confirmed his talent with Cyclo (1995), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000), presented at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section. His films are often steeped in Vietnamese culture while exploring universal themes such as memory, love, and loss. Over the years, he has continued his career with films such as I Come with the Rain (2009), Norwegian Wood (2010), and Eternity (2016), continuing to captivate audiences with emotionally powerful narratives. His most recent film, The Taste of Things (La Passion de Dodin Bouffant, 2023), earned him the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected to represent France at the 2024 Academy Awards, underscoring the lasting impact of his work on contemporary cinema.
