BIOGRAPHIE

Alla Kovgan is a Moscow-born, New York and Berlin-based filmmaker. eIn 2019, Alla wrote, directed and edited Cunningham (FR/GER/US), a 3D cinematic experience about choreographer Merce Cunningham that premiered at Toronto Film Festival, followed by New York, BFI London and many others. Theatrically released in 35 countries, CUNNINGHAM was nominated for Prix Italia 2023 and shortlisted for LOLA German Film Prize 2020. She also co-directed/wrote/edited MOVEMENT REVOLUTION AFRICA (ZDF/ARTE, 2007) and Emmy-nominated TRACES OF THE TRADE: A STORY FROM THE DEEP NORTH (Sundance, PBS 2008). She also edited MY PERESTROIKA (Sundance, PBS, 2010). Her short with children NEW LONDON CALLING (2010) won numerous awards and her first 3D VR piece Devil’s Lungs (with Finnish dance/music duo Puhti and the rockers Suistamon Sähkö) won Grand Prix at the Vienna Shorts Festival and made her the Artist- in-Residence at the Museum Quarter 21 in Vienna. In 2022, she produced/directed/edited 5 performance films for the Montclair’s Peak Performances with choreographers Donald Byrd, Netta Yerushalmy, Sean Gandini, Familie Flöz and Bill T. Jones. She is a recipient of numerous awards, including a Poynter Fellowship at Yale University, a Bogliasco Foundation Fellowship, a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship, and Brother Thomas Fellowship for artists working at a high level of excellence and creativity.
