BIOGRAPHIE

France Archivist, director Julien Faraut was born in Colombes in 1978. He studied contemporary history at the University of Paris Nanterre and began working in the film industry in 2001 as a programmer, animator and mediator in the ‘young audience cinema’ sector at the Espace 1789 in Saint-Ouen. Since 2003, he has been in charge of the film collection and production at the Institut national du sport, de l'expertise et de la performance (INSEP), a public institution under the auspices of the Ministry of Sport. Always taking as his starting point an archive from the film library for which he is responsible, he makes creative documentaries on the themes of excellence, the links between sport and cinema, and the boundaries between reality and fiction. His most remarkable and acclaimed films include Paris jeux t'aime (2004) about the 1924 Olympic Games and art competitions in Paris, Regard neuf sur Olympia 52 (2013) about the exhumation of Chris Marker's first forgotten feature film, L'Empire de la perfection (2018) about the torments of tennis player John McEnroe at Roland Garros, Les Sorcières de l'Orient (2021) about the first Japanese Olympic volleyball champions who inspired the famous manga Attacker You! Julien Faraut is currently working on a new feature-length documentary entitled Les Yeux fermés, about the links between mental imagery and cinema.
