Arom Choi

BIOGRAPHIE

Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Arom Choi has lived and farmed in Australia and traveled all around the world. The experience sparked her curiosity as an observer of people and inspired her work as a filmmaker. She received an MFA degree in Film Directing at CalArts, and her graduating thesis “Knock Knock Knock,” premiered at San Diego Asian Film Festival 2018. She is currently teaching fiction filmmaking at Colorado College, living in the American Southwest. Having studied theater and graphic design, and been inspired by films that show female alienation and liberation by diluting the limits between documentary and fiction (Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda), Arom lean into character-driven narratives and a magical-realist style of filmmaking. She experiments with limited visual framing and offscreen sound to explore characters through their larger environment and examine mental health issues.
