BIOGRAPHIE

Sophie Kurpershoek was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1989) and grew up in Pakistan and Turkey. She studied philosophy in Amsterdam, Tokyo and London and trained as a filmmaker at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent. She graduated in 2017 with her master’s film ‘'If only for a moment'’ with Charlotte De Bruyne ('The Twelve') and Sallie Harmsen ('Blade Runner 2049') in the leads. ‘'If only for a moment'’ has been screened at various festivals, including the Leuven International Short Film Festival (Leuven, 2017, Belgium), the Netherlands Film Festival (Utrecht, 2017, The Netherlands), the Ostend Film Festival (Ostend, 2017, Belgium) and the Antwerp Queer Arts Festival. The film was awarded Best Cinematography at the Breedbeeld Festival in Antwerp. In 2019 the film was selected for the British Film Institute’s LGBT film festival (BFI Flare). The Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) has given her access to its screenwriting workshop Scenario Atelier for the writing of her debut feature film ‘Metal Heart’ which was recently selected for TorinoFilmLab NEXT. She shot her new short film 'Wacht' ('Attends') in the summer of 2021, with production support from the VAF and Le Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de la Féderation Wallonie-Bruxelles (FWB-CCA). Sophie is also writing on the series 'No Hard Feelings' which was selected for ACE Series Special 2. In addition to being a filmmaker, she is also a writer, publishing her debut novel ‘Voorbij waren al die dagen gegaan’ with Atlas/Contact Publishers in April 2016. The same publishers have offered her a new contract for her book ‘Het meisje en de duivel’.
