Tom Nicoll is a Scottish writer and director, whose work has received Vimeo Staff Picks, and been shown on online film channels Alter and Short Of The Week. His films have screened at festivals including Palm Springs ShortFest, Tallinn Black Nights, and Edinburgh International Film Festival. He has had a short film funded through Creative Scotland’s SFTN Emerging Talent Scheme which screened on the BBC, and is in funded development for a feature film with Screen Scotland. His background is in comedy sketch writing for the stage, while his years spent shooting, producing and directing commercial films have provided him with a wide knowledge of the film production process. His commercial clients include HSBC, Williams F1, and Lidl. He is now freelance and focuses on narrative projects. His micro-budget feature film Retreat premiered at the Mark Kermode curated Screenplay Festival in Shetland, and had its international premiere at RiverRun Festival in the USA. The film won Best Music at the 2018 British Independent Film Festival. In 2018, he completed a development course with Creative Scotland through SFTN’s Shorts2Features scheme, and was shortlisted for participation in the inaugural Young Films Foundation residency. He attended the 2018 EIFF Talent Lab, the 2018 Stowe Story Lab, and the 2019 GoShort Talent Campus. He was made a member of BFI NETWORK x BAFTA Crew in 2019, and attended the Reykjavik Talent Lab in 2021. His short film Educated was produced with Sigma Films after being commissioned through the SFTN Emerging Talent Shorts scheme. After a successful festival run the film was selected to appear on the Next Big Thing strand on the BBC iPlayer. Tom is in post-production for his new short film I Know The Time Has Come. He is also in development with Screen Scotland for his feature film The Family - a psychological horror film - with producer David Jack of Sigma Films.
