SJ Inwards and Alec Ziff first met on a student film set at their alma mater, Northwestern University. Inspired by their shared love of film and a desire to support people dealing with chronic illness like the one with which SJ was born, the duo founded a philanthropic student film organization called Applause for a Cause. For the past 10 years, Applause has created an annual feature film and donated all proceeds from the screenings to charity. Alec and SJ co-wrote and co-directed three features together through Applause, which solidified their creative partnership (and best friendship). SJ and Alec now live in Los Angeles as full-time screenwriters and filmmakers. Alec has written on Netflix's NARCOS: MEXICO and worked on such projects as Netflix's BRIGHT and NARCOS. SJ won the Academy's Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting in 2017 and has gone on to pen features for Netflix, Amazon, and Amblin, with two of her features landing on the annual Black List in 2017 and 2020. SJ and Alec joke that they are two minds that share one vision. The Retrospective first entered their minds in 2016, and they are thrilled to share that singular vision with you today.
