Sam Barnes is a writer/director currently based in Victoria, Australia on the traditional lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung. Born and raised in Sydney, he is a Media Arts and Production graduate from the University of Technology Sydney, where in 2013 he did an exchange program at the University of Texas, Austin and is currently completing a Masters of Narrative Film and Television at the Victorian College of Arts. His award-winning short films Dream Reel (2015) and Kent Stays in the Woods (2017) have been successful in international markets, having screened in various global film festivals. In 2019, Sam wrote and directed the short film Mira (2019) and recently completed his graduate short film, Home (2021). Sam's filmmaking practice is inspired by a longing to explore his identity, his connection with nature and the ways in which these two intersect. He is interested in stories that give insight into different ways of seeing the world and understanding our place within it. Sam's mission is to make films that cultivate empathy and wonder in his audiences.
