BIOGRAPHIE

Yoshimi Joya is a Tokyo-based filmmaker. What led her to filmmaking was backpacking around the world over several years. She decided to tell stories that resonate with people universally. She started her film career in Japan as a production assistant in the marketing & advertising industry. In 2017, Yoshimi took a step further toward her dream and started working for Soft Citizen (Toronto, Canada) as a directors’ assistant. After returning to Tokyo, she set her course to make her first fiction film. This short film BE HAPPY ANYWAY was Yoshimi’s first directorial foray into narrative cinema. This film won “The Possibility of Cinema” award at The Obu Film Festival (2022), “The Ladies of Cinema” award at The Short Short Film Festival (2022), and is going to be shown at The St. Kilda Film Festival(2022).
