Pelle Gøtze is born in Aalborg in the Northern part of Denmark. After finishing his degree in film studies at University of Copenhagen he went to Texas to study documentary film production at the University of Texas at Austin. Pelle started out doing documentaries and music videos, but made his move into fiction by making short films mixing genres and later on focusing on comedic films. A Stone Cannot Fly is a story about different destinies and a study of moral and how different from each other we really are when all comes to all. In our society we tend to polarize people by deciding what’s considered wrong and right, good taste and bad taste, high brow and low brow etc. Living in Copenhagen I’m always surrounded by that and by people who often emphasize that difference lies between the rural and urban societies. In this film I wanted to explore and understand those differences instead of making fun of them. Because I feel that I’m a part of all of it. That’s why I decided to do this film in my hometown - far away from Copenhagen. For me making comedic films is all about finding a common frame of reference. It doesn’t have to be for everyone, but I put an honor to get close to something, that most of us somehow can relate to. That’s why I believe that a strong and clear plot, where a lot of the comedy lies within the plot, makes room to unfold the characters through the dialogue. In this film I love the characters way of adjusting to the plot and how the supporting characters push them forward into a darker and surreal universe where they act somehow naturalistic within their means in that specific world. Isn’t that what we all do to survive? With A Stone Cannot Fly I wanna show characters from different parts of society and I wanna push the boundaries of the genre conventions that we tend to get used to. I want the audience to give this film more than just a laugh. I did. We’re all different, but maybe we should aim for finding a more common frame of reference? A Stone Cannot Fly is in its own dark absurdity my contribution to that.
