David Ma is a Chinese-Australian filmmaker based in Sydney. His work primarily explores the duality of the Chinese immigrant experience in Australia and the interpersonal dynamics within immigrant families. In 2015, David graduated from the University of Technology, Sydney, after being awarded the Lawrie Fitzgerald Prize in Innovation and Creativity in Sound and/or Film. Since then, his scripted work has screened at festivals including the Sydney Film Festival, Raindance Film Festival (London), Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia. David is also one of the creators and directors on the online series GIRT BY FEAR, which went on to receive development funding from Screen Australia and the ABC. David's short film THE DANCING GIRL AND THE BALLOON MAN world premiered at the 70th Sydney Film Festival 2023 where it won the Dendy Live Action Short Award for Best Australian Short Film. In between scripted projects, David has worked on a number of documentaries for SBS, which have been nominated for multiple Walkley Awards, Australia’s highest honour in journalism. David’s latest documentary work, as one of the directors on WHO THE BLOODY HELL ARE WE, a documentary series exploring the contribution of various immigrant groups to forming modern Australian society, will be airing nationally in Australia later this year.
