Tara Aghdashloo is a writer and filmmaker born in Iran. As a journalist she worked on a number of documentaries and doc-series for television (BBC, Channel 4), as well as publishing her essays, short stories, articles, and poetry (The Guardian, Financial Times, The New Inquiry, and more), focusing on Middle Eastern and international politics, culture, and women’s issues. Recently Tara’s been writing, directing and producing independent films and docs, as well as music videos and commercials. In 2019 she completed a masterclass with renowned director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who is her mentor, and she is alumni of Sundance Collab’s Directing Actors Lab. Her first narrative short, THE RIDE, was commissioned by BFI Network and Canada Council for the Arts, with the support of Toronto Arts Council; it premiered at the Oscar Qualifying Cinequest Film Festival in 2023 and is currently in the circuit. Her second short film, BRIDGE, which she co-wrote and directed for BBC Film, is currently in post production. Her experimental short, ETERNAL ENTANGLEMENT, was screened at Japan International Film Festival and awarded best Experimental Film by Roma Short Film Festival. EMPTY YOUR POCKETS is Tara's third narrative short. She is working on her debut narrative feature with development funding from Telefilm Canada. Tara has regularly appeared panels and led workshops on inclusion and diversity in the film industry.
