W. Y. Geng was born in Beijing, China. As a child, she secretly practiced martial arts after watching her dad’s collection of Hong Kong and Hollywood movies. This was where her love for cinema was kindled. She graduated from Rice University in Houston, TX with a triple major in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Visual and Dramatic Arts (VADA). She also studied “A Practical Approach to Directing” at the Yale School of Drama. She obtained her MFA in Film & TV Production from the University of Southern California. During her time there, she was honored with the prestigious Irvin Kershner Fund for Documentary Filmmaking and both the Alfred P. Sloan Production and Writing Awards—the first time in the 24 year history of the program that one student has received multiple awards in the same calendar year. As a TV writer, she reached the semi-finals and finals of highly competitive programs such as the WB TV Writers’ Workshop, Fade In Awards, and Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards. In 2022, she attended the National Academy of Sciences Writers Retreat. Currently, her primary focus is on making movies that merge her background in science, engineering, mathematics, and technology with her passion for storytelling.
