Oates graduated from California Institute of the Arts with an MFA in Film Directing. In 2020, he was named one of the top 10 directors by the China Films Directors Guild Young Directors Supporting Program. His feature script project has won the grand prize “GIADA Art to Art" grant at FIRST International Film Festival (China) and the "Projects of special interest" at the China Golden Rooster Awards. His feature projects have been selected by Shanghai International Film Festival, Beijing International Film Festival WIP, Outfest screenwriting lab with Netflix fund for creative equity, Academy Nicholl Fellowships, among others. Additionally, he has contributed as a segment writer/director to 'Family Style,' a production by Warner Brothers' digital platform Stage 13, distributed by Max (formerly HBO Max). Furthermore, he has worked as an episode writer/director for the sci-fi series 'Survival Guide For Tomorrow,' produced by Bilibili in China. His short films have been screened at over 50 festivals worldwide, including Seattle International Film Festival and Austin Film Festival. He was selected by Talents Tokyo 2023, a talent program by Berlinale.
