BIOGRAPHIE

Karina Lomelin Ripper is a Mexican-American writer and director. Her films often tell stories that center Latina/x character and unpack societal malaise, opting to subvert expectations taking audiences on a ride. Her visual aesthetic is minimal and tends to build towards punches of grandeur. Karina’s production experience extends across indie films, documentaries and commercial productions. Recently, she wrote and directed a narrative short film CHISPA. The film was supported by Fujifilm and is a noir-creature-thriller, set to premiere on the film festival circuit in 2024. Her previous short documentary VISIONS screened at numerous festivals including Sidewalk, Bend, Maryland and won Best Documentary Short at the Official Latino Film Festival (2022). Her previous short documentary LA TIENDA, aired on PBS as part of The Latino Experience. The film was also awarded a Vimeo Staff Pick (2020). Her background is in associate producing on shows for National Geographic WILD and The Discovery Channel, as well as, feature documentaries for HBO and A&E Films. In 2021, she was awarded a coveted spot at the inaugural Eastern Oregon Filmmaker Residency. Karina was also accepted into the Venice Biennale Cinema College Workshop (2017) as the producer on the feature film Clementine. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival (2019). As the recipient of the Tell Your Story - Oregon Creative Foundation grant, she is currently developing a feature script for CHISPA. Karina is based in Portland, Oregon with her partner and their dog Horchata.
