BIOGRAPHIE

Zhilin Xu (b.1999) is a Chinese-born UK-resident artist-filmmaker. She is currently undertaking a full-time M.Phil. course in Film and Screen Studies at the University of Cambridge. In 2023, Zhilin graduated from Central Saint Martins (CSM), University of the Arts London, with first-class honours in BA Fine Art. She is a recipient of the CSM Graduate Award. The first edit of her film, Hiraeth (2023), is collected by the CSM museum. The installation version of the first edit of Hiraeth is shortlisted by both the Barry Martin Prize and This Earth Maison/0 Award of the LVMH luxury group. Zhilin’s map drawing and sculptures have brought her forth as one of the 12 shortlisted artists of the prestigious, UK nationwide, Evening Standard Art Prize (2023). Both pieces are used as props in Hiraeth. Zhilin’s drawing and sculptures are inspired by the style of chinoiserie and by her experience of growing up between British and Chinese cultures. Hiraeth was shot in London, in Tibet (China), and by the Yellow River in the Henan Province of China (Zhilin’s hometown). Its second edit is Zhilin’s debut short.
