Deborah Stein

BIOGRAPHIE

Deborah Stein is a writer and director who has created a body of work exploring the complexity of girlhood, and how lonely it is to navigate that alone. She writes coming-of-age narratives about the autonomy of children thrust into adult-like roles, without reliable adults in their lives. She tells stories about how jealousy, envy, and self-doubt can stunt us from being able to see or help each other. Deborah’s plays have been seen at the Public Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, Center Theatre Group, the Humana Festival of New American Plays, and the Gate Theatre in London, among others. She wrote choreographer Benjamin Millepied’s short film based on ROMEO & JULIET, starring Margaret Qualley with music by Nicolas Brittell. With Walt Disney Imagineering, she created immersive performances for the Star Wars theme parks. She is currently developing an original pilot at Freeform with ABC Signature and Liz Tigelaar and Stacey Silverman’s Best Day Ever. Her writing has been published in The Brooklyn Rail, Theatre Forum, Play: A Journal of Plays, and The Best American Poetry. Born and raised in New York, Deborah currently lives in L.A. and teaches at UC San Diego.
