BIOGRAPHIE

Smaragda Nitsopoulou was born in 1987 in Kavala, Greece. She studied film directing at IIEK Akmi in Greece, film editing at the Conservatoire Libre du Cinema Francais in Paris and she holds a Master’s degree in Art and Education from Middlesex University London and is currently a researcher at the Filmacady in Amsterdam. She is a multidisciplinary artist working with film, textile and performance. The theme of her practice is the representation of absence in and through cinematic practices. In 2012 she participated in the Generator Youth Audiovisual Forum organized by Nisi Masa. In 2013 she attended Robert McKee's 4-day screenwriting seminar "STORY". In 2017 she participated as a performer in the long-durational concert “Social Dissonance” by the artist Mattin presented at Documenta 14. In 2018 she was a fellow in the moving image category in the ARTWORKS organization with mentor Timonas Koulmasis. In 2020 she completed the video art triptych "The Ars Moriendi Triptych" which was presented at the Video Art Miden, Simultan and Athens Digital Arts Festival, among others. In 2021, she presented in Greece and abroad the short documentary "Death under control" on the subject of the First Cemetery of Athens, which was created under the auspices of the Municipality of Athens. In 2022, she completed the experimental short film "I always wanted to see a Martian" which has started its course in festivals and museums with great success. In 2022, her short film script "Tektite" was selected by the "Microfilm 2023" financial program of the National Greek Television(ERT) and the Greek Film Center.
