Born into the Yefri Royal House of Wenchi, she is the youngest daughter of the late First Lady, Madam Naa Morkor Busia, and Right Honorable Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, former Prime Minister of Ghana. Akosua spent many of her formative years in political exile with her family, in Holland, Mexico and then England, where she attended college at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Akosua was cast from a taped audition, to play “NETTIE” in the screen adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “THE COLOR PURPLE” directed by Steven Spielberg. After filming, Akosua lived and worked in the entertainment business across four continents, returning in 2006 to her native Ghana, where she currently resides with her daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton, from her former husband, the late John Singleton. Throughout the years, Akosua studied and worked in front and behind the camera, with the expressed purpose of championing documentaries and films highlighting Ghana, West Africa, and the African Diaspora. She applied and was chosen to participate at different times in the Writers, Producers, and Director’s courses at the Sundance Institute. Akosua’s recent DOCUMENTARY "Stevie Wonder: In Search of a Blessed Life", which Akosua wrote, directed and produced, is a compelling journey through early memories and faith in God of the legendary musician Stevie Wonder. The journey brings us to his most recent touch down in Accra, Ghana, where on his 74th birthday, May 13th 2024, Stevie Wonder was conferred Ghanaian citizen. Akosua’s DIRECTORIAL DEBUT is the full-length feature film ~ “IN SEARCH OF A BLESSED LIFE - He That Hath,” The Title Song “Bless My Way” is composed by Stevie Wonder, lyrics by Akosua Busia. The film is produced by PageTurner Production, and was created as a forerunner of an ongoing series franchise, each inspired by a Christian book, beginning with inspiration from the book “He That Hath” by Dag Heward-Mills. In the story, follow two brothers through many “dangers, toils and snares” in their Search for a Blessed Life. As well as directing the feature film, Akosua also plays a supporting role and is Co-Executive Produced with her sister, Honorable Dr. Abena P.A. Busia, Ghana’s Ambassador to Brazil. Akosua’s first Documentary, which she researched, wrote, produced, and directed, was - “THE PROF: A MAN REMEMBERED –- The Life, Vision, and Legacy, of Dr. K. A. Busia". A moving feature length documentary about the extraordinary scholar, statesman and man of God who rose from humble beginnings to become Prime Minister of the Second Republic of Ghana. The documentary premiered in Accra at The International Conference Center; in Los Angeles, California, at the Culver Plaza Theaters; in London, England at Saddlers Wells Theatre; and was screened at the British Houses of Parliament, followed by a debate chaired by Honorable MP. Diane Abbott. Among her other behind-the-camera work, Akosua’s writing credits include a SCREENWRITER: on the film adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning novel “BELOVED” starring Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey. Directed by Jonathan, Demme, for which Akosua was nominated for a Golden Satelite Award and Black Film Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
