BIOGRAPHIE

Born in Cali, Colombia in 1993, Juliana is a filmmaker & multidisciplinary artist currently based in Amsterdam. She obtained her Visual Arts BA in Colombia and an Animation MA in The Netherlands. Juliana focuses on the interaction of documentary and animation and makes use of diverse mediums to reflect on womanhood and cultural identity, as a female and a migrant in Europe. Her work stands out for its rich visuals, sensibility, poetry, and visual metaphors, along with an eye for harmonic use of color and textures, resembling paintings in the digital world. She contributes actively to the Dutch ad Colombian animation industries as a speaker and lecturer on topics like inclusivity, animated documentary and female representation in filmmaking, among others. She also as part of the founding committee of the Women in Animation for Colombia. With her latest animated documentary and trans-media project “Unlearning Motherhood”, Juliana documents powerful, tearing at times but deeply inspiring stories of unconventional motherhood with an outstanding use of visual storytelling. A project which has earned several development and realization grants from Playgrounds NEXT, AFK, Stimulerings Fonds and The Film Funds and is produced by Richard Valk.
