Makanaka Mavengere is a Zimbabwean-born, South African-based scriptwriter, author, and film producer. With over nine years of storytelling experience across television, film, and literature, she brings an emotionally rich and socially conscious voice to her work. Her storytelling is shaped by a passion for character-driven narratives, African identity, and elevating underrepresented perspectives. Her debut as an independent producer came with the short film Forget Me Not (2025), a moving exploration of dementia and love in the African context. For this deeply personal project, Makanaka wore multiple hats—creator, writer, producer, casting director, wardrobe lead, and executive producer—carefully curating every element while collaborating with an experienced director to bring her vision to life. The film is the centerpiece of a wider outreach initiative in Zimbabwe aimed at breaking the stigma around dementia. Makanaka has worked in various writers’ rooms and contributed to several notable South African productions including: • Mr Easylook (Netflix) • Loving Thokoza (Showmax) • Boxing Day (Showmax) • A Queen’s Lobola (eVOD) • Telenovelas: Diep City, Isitha: The Enemy • Kleva-ish – Co-writer; Winner of Best African Film at the Cannes Film Awards 2023 and Best Feature Film at the National Film and TV Awards South Africa 2023.
