SYNOPSIS
The great train robbery was undoubtedly the most popular film of early cinema, in release long after 1903. Contemporary advertisements describe it as "a faithfull duplication of the genuine Hold ups made famous by various outlaw bands in the farwest", showing that Porter may have intended it as a reconstruction of actual events rather than a fiction film.
