In 1828, Simon Bolivar decided that the "Island of Providence", located in the Maracaibo Lake, would become a permanent asylum for people with Hansen's disease (leprosy). In 1985, the State closed it down and patients were transferred to the Cecilia Pimentel Hospital, also located in Zulia State.
