In the days of Napoleon, when a soldier was hurt on the battle field, he underwent surgery without anaesthesia. During the operation the patient was allowed to smoke a ceramic pipe of opium. If it fell and broke on the ground that meant the soldier had died. Whence the french expression: "casser sa pipe" (to kick the bucket).
