SYNOPSIS

Saint-Petersburg, at the end of the 19th Century. Vassili Ivanovitch, a gloomy young man, lives a secluded life in a dilapidated garret room. His only companion is a mysterious painting of a woman. Madly in love with the painting, he devours it in a murderous rage and will spend the rest of his days trying to reproduce it...
