SYNOPSIS

Russia 1917, Dr. Polyakov is assigned to a post in a clinic in the middle of the steppes. Isolation and loneliness drive him to a morphine addiction. He soon experiences the agony of withdrawal and sinks into distress and madness, with suicide seeming like the only way out.
