SYNOPSIS

Daruk, a Caribbean man, is living in a real estate listing in upstate New York that Colleen, a real estate agent, is trying to sell. The house has a life of its own, echoing their thoughts and desires, and offering passages to secret spaces. As they each try to find out why they’re there and why they won’t - or can't - leave the house, they develop an intense connection, and the consequences are everlasting. Coyotes is a narrative short film directed by Vashti Anderson, a Trinidadian-American female filmmaker. It tells an authentic story that contributes to the growing dialogue in film about Caribbean people, the diaspora, and our diverse experiences. Coyotes is an extension on themes explored in Vashti's narrative feature film, Moko Jumbie, which was filmed on location in Trinidad, West Indies and explores themes of race, class and post-colonialism. Vashti utilized magic realism as a way to express cultural nuances and difficult themes, such as post-colonialism and generational trauma. In Coyotes, she utilizes magic realism to dive deep into the idea of boundaries - those between cultures, human interactions, fatalism and determinism, sense of belonging and identity, and life and death.
