One day in 1930s Ukraine, Maxim, a family man and cucumber farmer, receives a knock at the door. Local authorities tell him he must give his land to Stalin and all the food that goes with it. Maxim is outraged and refuses to comply; his land is his life, and his family will perish without it. Shortly afterwards, these same authorities come back to arrest him and stuff him into a packed train carriage bound for 1,000km away from home. At the end of that journey is the beginning of another that will shape not only Maxim's future but the future of his country.
