SYNOPSIS

In Living Memory is a portrait-based, experimental-doc essay film that portrays a Black American family from the perspective of its youngest generation, ultimately exploring notions of the family archive, being, memory, and the rhythm of life through the Black gaze. On a tour of the moments, spaces, and ideas that make them— from their hometown (Harlem), Grandmother, and childhood apartment to family photos, voicemails, and a trip to the Caribbean— the director explores the tension of knowing and not as they piece together their understanding of their family history and themselves. Told through vignettes about home, memory, self, and the unknown, emphasizing oral traditions, In Living Memory covers intersected topics from gentrification to immigration and gender within a multigenerational frame. The film explores the frighteningly stunning life that is to live in memory while Black — while human: knowing both so much and nothing at all.
