In the heart of the Magdalena Medio, we embark on a moto-mesa journey that explores the intricate parallels and contradictions between life and death in Colombia's old national railways, and the fragility of a community of moto-meseros that brought these forgotten tracks to life. "The Future We Were" delves into the everyday stories of the abandoned railways on the border of Antioquia and Santander, examining the intersections between the fragility of life and the finality of death. Alongside a careful selection of archival footage, this abstract and experimental exploration immerses us in the complex and rich political and social history of the national railways. It reveals that the train tracks carry not only the weight of the past but also the indelible marks of a conflicted present and the uncertainty of a diffuse and alternative future. Through intimate and reflective images, the film explores the complexities of human existence and the very struggle of life to persist in Puerto Parra and Puerto Berrío, as well as the inevitability of death that governs their railways. It confronts realities that are both raw and desolate, yet exciting, unexpected, and hopeful.
