In a small apartment in Mumbai, Abhi, a 30-year-old from a tier two city in India- Meerut goes about his listless life. With clockwork repetition- gets ready, a phone call with mom, packs his things, wears his shoes, grabs a toast, leaves for work- same thing everyday- Monday to Friday. His ‘Bai’, Deepa, has become the de facto caretaker of the house. Bai is a commonly used term for a house help in India whose chores include sweeping, mopping, washing dishes, washing clothes, cleaning bathrooms etc. in multiple houses on a daily basis, seven days a week. On weekdays, Abhi lets Deepa in just as he leaves for work. She manages a little solitude in this empty apartment. In her quiet domain, she completes her tasks without interruption, often finding extra things to do—tending to the plants, mending a garment, or occasionally lying down on the floor for a brief rest. This stolen moment of peace is a luxury she can't afford in her own home due to lack of space. Weekends are a different story. With Abhi around, Deepa feels more conscious of his presence, moving more swiftly to stay out of his way. Their interactions are minimal; most exchanges consist of Abhi giving instructions that Deepa nods to obediently. Through this narrative, we explore five days of their lives within the confines of the apartment gently questing the divide we have created on the basis on of classes.
