Laiz, a 7 year old girl from Rio de Janeiro, has curly and yellow hair, a wide nose, fair skin and blue eyes. Since very young she was taught by her mother Patricia that being albino is not a limiting condition. She still doesn’t know what she wants to be when she grows up, but she knows there are many possibilities. Zelito, a 65-year-old man fro Bahia, also black and albino, only understood his condition at 20, when he was used as an example in a biology class. Unlike Laiz’s porcelain skin, Zelito’s has undergone more than 100 surgical procedures to remove precancerous spots, which is part of his routine. AT THE EDGE OF SKIN is an observational documentary guided by its characters. The film is constructed through the lives of Laiz and Zelito, juxtaposing images, mirroring and tensing framing and situations. The routine of both, at home and at school, as well as in the dermatological office and in the Association, intersect and show the temporal Zeitgeist that separates the lives of these two characters, but also unites them in a complex and ancestral network.
