This Body That Slips Away Several years ago, I lost part of my physical autonomy. And yet, no one can see it. This feeling of imperceptible disability brought with it an added pain: the invisible disability. An invisible disability manifests as a limitation that is undetectable to others, coupled with a persistent sense of pain within ourselves. Even though disabilities vary widely, the sensations are often similar. They may include pain, intense fatigue, a feeling of being out of sync, discrimination, or the sense of not being understood. And I wonder—how can the sensation of invisible disability be conveyed through images and words? I meet five individuals living with various unseen disabilities. They share with me their intimate experiences. Subtle expressions of their bodies reveal the emotions they feel—physical or psychological pain, and most of all, heightened vulnerability. Each text poses the same question: What makes you feel like you are not able-bodied?
