Cold Toast is a dark comedy about Teddy, a lonely young man who wants to take his own life with a toaster in his bathtub on New Year's Eve from 1999 to 2000. He meticulously planned the act, but the toaster breaks while he is preparing his last meal. Desperate to find a new toaster on New Year's Eve, Teddy finally finds an electrical store that is still open. There he meets the bored cashier Johnny and buys a new toaster from him. Back home, Teddy finally wants to go through with his plan - until the booming bass from the party next door causes the ceiling lamp to fall on the new toaster and ruin it again. He buys another toaster from a confused Johnny, but as fate has it, this one breaks again. Resigned, he buys a third, final toaster from an amused Johnny, who gives him a piece of candy with the receipt and wishes him a happy new year. A humane gesture that Teddy hadn't expected. In the apartment, Teddy makes the final preparations and begins his plan. As he lies in the bath, Johnny suddenly appears out of nowhere and speaks to him. The two share an intimate moment – until Teddy wakes up from his phantasy. Just in time, he manages to leap out of the bathtub into safety. While the fireworks explode, Teddy stands by his window and eats the candy that Johnny handed him. It’s a bittersweet moment, until suddenly a bird hits the window and falls – immediately dead – to the ground.
