Based on a true incident from Taiwanese folklore, To Set a Spirit Free begins with a religious fish-release ritual that takes an unexpected turn—someone brings a fish home instead of setting it free. Days later, an elderly man named Sheng-Bo vanishes without a trace. A local deity declares he may have blocked a spirit’s path to reincarnation and was taken by a ghost. An innocent act of compassion soon spirals into absurd blame and superstition. As suspicion shifts and stories multiply, the community realizes—there may be no one to blame at all. When truth is out of reach, what do we choose to believe? Darkly humorous and gently haunting, the film explores how people confront the unknown, and how sometimes, the stories we tell ourselves matter more than the facts.
