SYNOPSIS

"Head Up" tells the poignant story of Arya and Zeynep, childhood friends reunited in the heart of Istanbul, as they navigate their inner and societal struggles. Arya, a queer individual, strives to run a collective art studio in Istanbul. Zeynep, fleeing the oppressive constraints of her small-town family, goes to be with Arya. The dances performed by Arya and the communal, familial queer art circle they inhabit leave a profound impact on Zeynep's soul. In Turkish society, women's freedom is often tied to marriage. Zeynep, too, considers marrying Arya to escape these pressures. However, Arya's financial difficulties, debts, and responsibilities towards the studio heighten the tension between them. This tension culminates when Arya advises Zeynep to disregard others' opinions and focus on her own path. Moved deeply by Arya's mesmerizing performance, Zeynep decides to liberate herself. In a world where their families remain unaware of Arya's queer identity, Arya and Zeynep's plans to marry force them to re-evaluate their own freedoms and their bond with each other. Zeynep arrives in Istanbul with the dream of building a free life with Arya. Yet, this journey demands that both confront their inner conflicts and societal pressures.
