SYNOPSIS

I am a Malaysian Chinese and have been living in Taiwan for over a decade. The hibiscus, originally from China, is recognized as Malaysia’s national flower and is known as the "big red flower." However, in both Taiwan and Malaysia, the hibiscus is not generally considered a non-native plant. This mirrors the experience of Malaysian Chinese—accepted yet never fully belonging. I share similar appearances and language with Taiwanese people, yet in reality, I remain a “non-native” outsider. Patterns are symbolic of a culture. I use non-native plants to create a collage of batik designs representing Malaysia, symbolizing the migration and cultural fusion of the Chinese people. Through the imagery of plants growing and wilting, I trace the story of my life while reflecting on the struggles of identity faced by Malaysian Chinese.
