SYNOPSIS

What Is Left Behind is a haunting documentary that follows scientists and divers across Europe as they uncover a deadly legacy hidden beneath our seas: millions of tons of weapons and chemical munitions dumped after World War II. Through the eyes of an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) exploring the ocean's deepest, most dangerous depths, the film reveals how what was once considered an "easy solution" for post-war cleanup has become an environmental time bomb. Corroding barrels, unexploded bombs, and toxic chemicals continue to leak into our waters 75+ years later, creating an invisible crisis that grows more urgent as our seas become increasingly valuable for trade, energy, and infrastructure. Director Katja Verheul transforms real scientific research into a meditation on memory, responsibility, and the long shadow of human conflict, treating the rusted, algae-covered remnants as silent witnesses to a past that refuses to stay buried. The film challenges audiences to confront our collective responsibility for healing the wounds we've inflicted on our planet.
