My name is Tatyana Kim (she/her), I am a finalist of the ABC-Disney Diversity Program, the DGA Student Awards, and the Commercial Directors Diversity Program, and a winner of the Microsoft Hololens Hackathon. I received my Master's degree in filmmaking from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. I have embraced four cultures - born in Kazakhstan, of Korean descent, and speaking Russian as my first language, and now, for the past decade, realizing my artistic goals in the US. Before moving to the US in 2012, I worked as a copywriter in the international advertising agency Young&Rubicam (Y&R), where I was fortunate to create numerous award-winning commercials. My passion for directing was discovered way before I committed to it full-time. My first short film, Spell It (2008), traveled to the 38th Molodist International Film Festival in Ukraine, which inspired me to find ways to become a director. Since graduating from ArtCenter, I have directed six short films, co-produced a feature documentary film called "Chosen" about five Korean-American candidates running for the US Congress. I also directed a theatre show “OTOSOTR," which won "Asian Arts Award” at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, as well as “Best Experimental Show” at the United Solo Festival at the NYC Theatre Row in Manhattan. This year, I directed my most personal work, a short film called "Off Hollywood: The Undocumented Journey of Hope" about an immigrant community that lives in the middle of an artist's dream - Hollywood. This community is woven of multiple ethnic groups that are connected by mutual history, trauma, one language and a new home. My work addresses issues of the post-colonial mentality, identity preservation, and what diversity will look like in the 2020s. Changing the world's perception of female directors, I strive to connect the world by creating original aesthetics and a truly diverse, multicultural narrative.
