BIOGRAPHIE

[EN] Born in Tokyo and growing up in Singapore, Nakanishi is a Japanese filmmaker whose work focuses on genre films with particular emphasis on female-driven social horror. She gained experience across the creative and business functions within the film industry, working for a Japanese film studio, satellite broadcasting for movies and film distribution companies. She gained experience in film production by taking part in a variety of international projects as a producer, assistant director and art assistant before shifting her focus to writing and directing. Her past works include HANA(2018), a supernatural horror shot in Korea, SWALLOW(2021), a food-infused body horror shot in Taiwan, and BORDER(2023), a Sci-Fi-esque home invasion horror shot in Korea – playing at festivals including Tampere (award winner), Sitges, and Kurzfilmfestival Hamburg, and streaming on Shudder while being broadcast across Latin America through Mórbido TV. Through filmmaking, Nakanishi hopes to expand the spectrum of genre films by challenging traditional storytelling norms and centering on women's experiences that are often overlooked in cinema. She is an alumna of BIFF’s Asian Film Academy 2016, Berlinale Talents Tokyo 2023 and Sundance/NHK Script lab 2024. Nakanishi is currently developing her first feature film.
