Meital Cohen Navarro is an Israeli filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her perspective as a nonbinary storyteller begin when she was teenager. At age 18, she won the top prize at the Wim Van Leer Young Film Makers Competition at the International Jerusalem Film Festival on a short film she wrote and directed “Happy New Year”. She earned her MFA in Directing from NYFA-LA, and holds a BA degree in Business Management and Communication. Meital’s experiences include working at the Israel Broadcasting Authority on documentary films and the renowned investigative documentary weekly show “Mabbat-Sheni". Her passion for diverse cultures led her to live in Africa where she reported for the Israeli newspaper Maariv. Her stories depicted social conflict, and daily life in countries like DR-Congo, Mozambique and South-Africa. Meital’s journalism background imbues her narrative filmmaking with a detail-oriented realism. Her films tell stories of ordinary people and life’s unassuming moments that contain a deeper resonance with a specific focus on the unique challenges that women face in their daily lives. She has written and directed several acclaimed short films which capture the notable moments of womanhood from unique and unexpected perspectives, like “Over My Dead Body” written and performed in Farsi. She is currently in development on her feature film, “One Way,” which tells the story of a Jewish mother, who after being estranged from her family and ultra-orthodox community, tries to stop her daughter from entering into an arranged marriage.
