BIOGRAPHIE

Native from Montfermeil, Ladj Ly began his career with the Kourtrajmé collective (slang for for “Short-Film” in French), founded in 1995 by his childhood friends Kim Chapiron and Romain Gavras. He starts working in cinema as an actor and then as a director with his first short film “Montfermeil les bosquets” shot in 1997. At the same time, he worked on several film and TV documentaries making of. In 2004, he co-authored the documentary "28 millimeters" with the artist photographer JR, who displays large-format portraits on the walls of Clichy, Montfermeil and Paris. In 2016, he produced the commercial "Marakani" in Mali for the international solidarity NGO of Max Havelaar France. After the riots that occurred in Paris’s suburbs in 2005, and the death of two teenagers, Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré, Ladj Ly decided to film his neighborhood for a year and make a documentary of it. In 2007, the film is finalized and called "365 days in Clichy-Montfermeil ". In 2008, he shot for the Kourtrajmé collective the short film “Go Fast Connection”. He continues his work as a documentary filmmaker alongside Said Belktibia and Benkora Sangaré, producing in 2014 "365 days in Mali", the testimony of a troubled region where militias and Tuaregs are preparing for war. In 2017, he directed the short film “Les Misérables”, nominated at the César in 2018 and awarded at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. The same year, he co-directed with Etienne de Freitas the documentary “A Voix Haute”, also nominated for the César. In 2018, he made his first feature film inspired by his eponym short film. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, competed for the best international fetaure film at the 92nd Academy Awards and won 4 César awards, including the best film and César of the Audience. The film was release in french theaters on November 19, 2019 and cumulated more than 1.7 million cinema admissions. Amazon is the international distributor. In 2020, he directed during the lock down a short film, Homemade, broadcast since June 30, 2020 by Netflix.
