Hu Liwei (b.1994) works with moving image and video installation. She holds a MFA in Film, Video, New Media and Animation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Liwei’s work investigates the inexorable development produced in urban history, in the relationship with nature, and in the profound strata of the collective psyche by capital-technology, attempting to build an intimacy with everyday nuances. She combines observation with a range of methods, such as diaristic structure, re-enactment, structuralist strategy and scripted narratives to dissolve borders between avant-garde film, documentary, and landscape study. Her work seeks to map out a landscape geography transformed by affective and subjective states through experimenting and questioning the current moving image making methods. Liwei has received fellowships and residencies from the Rijksakamie van beeldende kunsten (Guest Resident Artist), Asia Culture Center, and the Headlands Center for the Arts. Her works have been shown and exhibited internationally including System of Vision, Experimental Sound Studio Chicago, Online, 2021; Patterns of Thought III, Zhou B Art Center, Chicago, IL, USA, 2021; Sesame Opens a Skylight, Dimensions Art Center, Chongqing, China, 2021; Open Studio, Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea, 2019.
