[EN] River Yuhao Cao 曹宇豪 (b. 1997, China) is a moving image and performance artist based in London. Cao’s works examine mourning as a regenerative practice, rebuilding landscape from his early memories and discovering the perspective of the revenant. River is interested in lamentation as a translation strategy to examine how mourning dissolves binary boundaries to reveal the fluidity of the subject. Cao's work aims to create self-actualised spaces to enable the audience to rethink grief and queerness. Cao’s work has been featured in the Visions du Réel, Nyon; B3 Biennial of the Moving Image, Frankfurt; Tofu Collective, Copenhagen; Forma Arts and Media, London; Reference Point 180 The Strand, London; Sadie Coles HQ, London; Saatchi Gallery, London; Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham; Spike Island, Bristol; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London among others. River received the Arts Council England National Lottery Project Award for 2024, the "Film London FLAMIN Fellowship" for 2023-24, and was a finalist for the "Film London Lodestars Award 2025" in the Artist Filmmaker category. Additionally, River was nominated for the "LOEWE FOUNDATION / Studio Voltaire Award" in 2023 and was featured in the "DAZED 100" alongside Queer Direct in 2022.
