[EN] Melodies from the Ancestral Soil: Echoes of Huizhou is a poetic documentary on the theme of opera from the perspective of audiences, which takes Chinese opera as a prism to reflect the spiritual homeland of the Chinese people. Refusing didacticism, director employs a strikingly poetic audiovisual language to explore how opera—a fading art form—serves as both a mirror and a wound, reflecting the paradoxes of belonging in an era of urban dislocation and fractured heritage. By weaving static long shots of vanishing landscapes with immersive soundscapes of folk melodies and urban noise, the film constructs a polyphonic requiem for the soul of a civilization caught between ancient ritual and relentless modernity. It rooted in the aesthetics of classical Chinese scroll paintings, the film’s visual framework unfolds as a series of meticulously composed tableaux.The director’s preoccupation with stillness becomes an act of resistance. In an age of hyper-stimulation, the camera’s refusal to cut away forces viewers to confront the sedimentation of time. Aerial shots of mist-cloaked mountain ranges juxtaposed with time-lapse sequences of neon-lit megacities articulate a silent dialogue between permanence and impermanence. The film’s most radical intervention lies in its treatment of Chinese Opera not as artifact but as living trauma.
