SYNOPSIS

[EN] Inspired by the director Xinhui Ma’s life story, this animated short film follows a young Chinese woman stuck in a hospital bed in Morocco after a surfing accident. Despite language barriers and physical limitations, she finds solace in the garden outside her window. Reshaping personal revelations on gender, sexuality, and cultural turmoil, the film pairs stunning visuals with dreamy storytelling. The story focuses on the arc of The Girl’s growth, from a morphine-induced fantasy dream world to a heartbreaking nightmare, whilst the journey of becoming more in touch with her body through recovery, in the wake of reclaiming her body over physical trauma and overcoming dependency to her doctor and crutches of sorts. She is finally free.
