SYNOPSIS

[EN] The story of this surreal period piece takes place in a traditional village in what is now Slovakia, where life is grim. Poverty, hard labor, harsh conditions, and lack of education have left people hopeless. Their only escape is alcohol. Jan, a lonely man, spends his days working in the fields. The other villagers keep their distance because he refuses to drink, the one thing that binds them together. One evening, his life takes a turn when a mysterious stranger appears. This man seems to embody both temptation and despair, reflecting Jan’s darkest thoughts and the decay of his surroundings. With each visit, the stranger chips away at Jan’s beliefs, filling him with doubt and pushing him to the edge. The story asks a fundamental question: Is it better to escape reality through intoxication, pretending to find happiness, or to face life’s harsh truth without illusion, no matter how painful it may be?
