[EN] Speara follows the journey of Mitsuki, a 26-year-old world champion spearfisher, living in California. Originally from Japan, Mitsuki moved abroad at age 16, seeking a new start away from difficult family dynamics. In the USA, she developed her spearfishing practice while working as a private chef. The film features immersive, atmospheric shots of Mitsuki hunting underwater in the kelp forest. She reflects on a childhood trauma—an experience of nearly drowning— that left her with a fear of water. Her later discovery of the ocean’s beauty became a transformative force, helping her overcome obstacles on various levels of her life. Mitsuki found both empowerment and community in the spearfishing world, where she experienced the support she lacked from her family during her adolescence. Despite the inherent risks of spearfishing, Mitsuki’s connection to nature has helped her heal, culminating in her achievement of setting two spearfishing world records.
