[EN] During the War of Resistance Against Japan, a small village in Northeast China was ravaged by war. The father of a young girl named Xiaomai had gone off to battle with no further news, and her elder brother Damai had joined the Anti-Japanese Allied Forces. Xiaomai often missed her brother and longed for a bountiful harvest of rice ears to make onigiri for the soldiers. When Li Zhongguo brought news of Damai's sacrifice, her mother concealed the truth to protect Xiaomai. Though Xiaomai wished to join the army, her mother dissuaded her, and Li Zhongguo promised to deliver the rice ears she collected to her brother. While delivering onigiri, Xiaomai encountered an air raid and witnessed the sacrifice of soldiers; saluting them, she vowed to serve her country. When the autumn rice ripened, Xiaomai put on Damai's cap and headed to the battlefield. After the founding of New China, her mother seemed to see both her sons and her husband waving to her in the distance.
